Episodes 1 – 12
January – June
2013

Pennies from Heaven was the inaugural production of The Theatre on King. Based on Dennis Potter’s BBC miniseries and adapted by Ryan Kerr, twelve episodes were performed from January to June, 2013 with episode one performed on January 7.

Pennies From Heaven is a grim, dark and disturbing tale of adultery, prostitution, homelessness and murder set in the mid 1930s. The story centers on Arthur Parker, a traveling sheet music salesman, who escapes the daily drudgeries of his job and unhappy marriage through fantastic, escapist daydreams. The script is technically a musical, but the actors don’t actually sing; they lip synch. The music featured throughout is unconventional and somewhat removed from mainstream contemporary pop of the era.

Pennies From Heaven, originally written by Dennis Potter, was a critically acclaimed six-part British TV mini-series initially broadcast on the BBC in 1978 starring Bob Hoskins. In 1981, Potter adapted the series for a Hollywood movie starring Steve Martin and changed the setting from England to Chicago. The film version, despite being a box office disaster, launched Dennis Potter’s career as a screenwriter. He went on to write Brimstone and Treacle (1982), Gorky Park (1983) and Track 29 (1988), among others. Dennis Potter died from cancer in 1994
