Victoria Ward (October 1-17)

Kitten trailer.

Visual artist Victoria Ward reimagines 1990s indie hit “Kitten with a Crucifix,” working with local performers Bradley Boyle and Zach Tutt, livestreaming, tweeting, and blogging. Work presented in progress and online.

Victoria Ward is a rural based painter and writer. In the 1990s Ward was a professional playwright in Toronto and worked with some of the most innovative companies in Canada; DNA Theatre, Crow’s Theatre, Buddies in Bad Times and Autumn Leaf Performance. She was part of a sketch comedy troupe that toured across Canada, has produced and written two one person theatre works and written a libretto for an opera.  She is now primarily a painter and has had over 40 art exhibitions across Canada and the UK.  Along with her partner painter Gary Blundell, Ward has created community/art projects in Cobalt, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Orillia, Minden, Norfolk County and Toronto and exhibited at most regional galleries in Ontario.  Ward’s work is in private collections in Canada, the US, India and Ireland.

Event details

Kitten! reimagines Victoria Ward’s 1993 indie theatre hit. eye magazine tagged it as “a smart and sexy… ‘confessional’ monologue… Doubt is rooted in the awakening of the loins… It’s a brief, but charged account of one woman’s pilgrimage to authenticity.” A collaborative and intergenerational artistic team engages with the material with a deconstructionist, postmodern and vivisectionist approach. The work expressed tensions of its time: indoctrination, sexuality during the AIDS pandemic, youth, and Catholicism. Key themes and tone persist, drawing us to revisit the piece. How has theatre transformed the world over the centuries? How can it continue to do so now? Has Covid changed how we frame intimacy? Rather than passive audiences, we develop audience-participants who connect to the process throughout; their participation is integrated into the work, becoming part of the ever-evolving performance text. Presentation is digital and live.
Presented in partnership with: Public Energy, Ptbo Arts Alive Fund, and The Ontario Council for the Arts
