Slept with William Carlos Williams, then punched him in the neck. Obsessed over Marcel Duchamp. Proposed marriage to Djuna Barnes. Inspired Ernest Hemingway. Lover of poet Claude McKay. Stole the subscription cheques from her publishers’ mailbox. Terrified and inspired artists in equal measure. Outrageous? Doesn’t even begin to describe her.
